CULPEPER -- Try as they might, the Eastern View and Orange junior varsity football teams couldn't beat Mother Nature on Wednesday night.

The game's scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff was delayed for more than an hour due to lightning strikes in the vicinity of Cyclone Stadium.  Then after nearly a quarter of action, lightning struck twice, forcing Eastern View AD Mark Settle to put the proceedings on hold.

"As of right now, the game is suspended," Settle said, adding that no final decision had been made as to whether or not the two teams will resume play in the near future.

At the time of the suspension, Orange led 6-0 with 45 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.  The visiting Hornets had just concluded a 12-play, 40-yard touchdown drive, with freshman Thomas Payette's 5-yard touchdown run as the capper.

Payette also had a 24-yard reception from freshman quarterback Zachary Ferguson that helped Orange overcome a second-and-25 hole early in the drive.

Eastern View (2-0) only ran two offensive plays, losing a fumble on a botched shotgun snap that set up Orange's scoring march.
