Jim was born in Safford, Arizona, the son of Glenn and Dorothy Casey. He lived in Duncan, Phoenix, and Yuma before attending the University of Arizona in Tucson. There he joined the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and it was at a fraternity/sorority exchange that he met his future wife, Mary Jo Gobel. He completed college, worked in the family business, returned to college and completed a major in accounting at U of A and a Masters in Public Administration at USC. He worked for Ernst and Ernst, The Navel Audit Service before retiring from the Department of Defense IG in 1993. Bitten by the travel bug, following the birth of two children, the family camped throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Audit Service found him spending time in Guam, Okinawa, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and various parts of the U.S. In retirement he and Mary Jo were fortunate to be able to travel the world taking cruises and land trips.
