A woman in her 20s required surgery for injuries sustained in a reported dog attack outside of her home Wednesday in Spotsylvania County.

Around 4:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 900 block of Stonewall Lane in the Chancellor area and observed a female being actively attacked by two dogs, believed to be of the Cane Corso breed, that lived in her home, according to a news release Thursday from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputies attempted to intervene to get the dogs off the woman, at which time the dogs turned their aggression towards them. During the attack, a deputy was bitten, causing significant injury to his upper leg area, according to the news release. The dogs were ultimately shot by the responding officers, in order to end the attacks.

The woman was transported to a local hospital where she underwent surgery for her injuries. The deputy who bitten was also transported to a local hospital, treated and later released.

The dogs were transported to a local emergency animal hospital, where they later died from their gunshot wounds, the news release stated. The attack remains an ongoing investigation.
