A large tree nearly struck a motorist near the Rixeyville Post Office Thursday night as a squall of thunderstorms dashed in and out of Culpeper County and the area at the evening commute.

Route 229 close to Ma & Paw’s Store closed temporarily around 5:30 p.m. when the quick-moving storm took down the tree onto the two-lane road, according to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s office photo from the scene showed a small, white car immediately against the large trunk, surrounded by branches on the slick, wet road. The car’s passengers were not injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Can’t even imagine the scare that caused!” read one post on the CCSO Facebook page. “God has his hand on them for certain! Bless whoever they are!”
