The chains and big-box stores aren’t the only ones who can play at the Black Friday game. In Culpeper’s historic district at Davis and Main streets, downtown shops are dishing out the bargains, too.

From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, dozens of unique businesses will extend a warm welcome and offer deals on holiday gifts, retail goods, and food. For shoppers’ convenience, owners, managers and staff will keep shops open into the early evening hours. Everything is a few steps away; there’s no climbing in and out of your car again and again, hunting for a parking place each time.

The day kicks off the downtown’s Open Late Holidays 2019 festivities. The discounts will continue every Friday into Christmas week, on Dec. 6, 13 and 20.

Participating merchants will include Beer Hound Brewery, The Cameleer (until 7 p.m. only), Grass Rootes, Green Roost, Homeconomics, INes, JIMNI Custom Laser Engraving, La Bee da Loca, Le Monkey House, Lollipop Station, Momma’s Hemp, Multiverse Comics, N’ Style fashion Gallery, Pepperberries, Reigning Cats & Dogs, Seriously Sweet on Davis Street, Shenandoah Garden Spot, Taste Oil Vinegar Spice, The Frenchman’s Corner of Culpeper, The Rusty Willow Boutique, VINOSITY, and Wanderlust Gifts.

Green Roost on East Davis, open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., is marking down all of its goods by 20 percent—the whole store—on Black Friday only.

At Beer Hound on Commerce Street beside the railroad depot and Museum of Culpeper History, people can take a brief fuel break and enjoy pizza and a pint for $10! Opening at noon, the restaurant will also offer a 25 percent sale on growlers, and give a $20 gift certificate to anyone who purchases a $50 gift certificate.

Around the corner at 201 Waters Place, Suite 109, Wine & Design will host its Pop In & Paint event from 1 to 5 p.m. Clients choose which painting they’d like to create from the store’s gallery, and then an artist will help them choose materials and offer guidance throughout. All ages are welcome, for $25 per person.

People can reserve a spot now at Wine & Design is also offering 50 percent off its studio canvas classes.

Two blocks away, at Grass Rootes at East Davis and East streets, the restaurant will serve caramel bourbon Apple pie and gift cards for loved ones, with live music by Long Island Johnny on Friday night.

Small Business Saturday

Fun for bargain hunters continues during downtown’s Small Business Saturday—“The Day We All Shop Small”—as Culpeper merchants offer in-store specials.

“Small businesses are the heartbeat of our community,” said Culpeper Renaissance Inc., the nonprofit group that’s been working hard for years to revitalize downtown. “They’re the corner stores that create jobs. The hardware stores that help build our economy. And the mom-and-pop shops whose very presence makes a neighborhood, your neighborhood.

“The Shop Small Movement inspires people to shop with and support these small businesses as well as give back to the places that have given their communities so much.”

Thirty-six different businesses and eateries will take part in Saturday’s extravaganza with discounts, giveaways, and tasty treats. The complete list can be found on Culpeper Renaissance’s Facebook page; scroll down to find it, download and print it for quick reference.

Here’s a small sampling of the fun and bargains to be had:

On Water Street, 18 Grams Coffee Lab will deliver a free Christmas dessert with the purchase of any of its delicious toast open-face sandwiches. Nearby, Far Gohn and Beer Hound Brewery will offer special deals for fans of fermented-grain beverages.

On East Davis, Knakal’s bakery will sell a dozen donuts for $8 and half a dozen for $4.

From noon to 5 p.m., Vinosity will host a complimentary wine and beer tasting.

The Frenchman’s Corner will have hot-chocolate tastings from noon to 2 p.m.

Elevate Co-work & Community, next to Frost’s Diner, will host local artists and crafters for a holiday gift market.
