A Culpeper man died in a single-vehicle crash early last Sunday morning in northwest Culpeper County, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coffey in a news release.

Sunday, Jan. 19, at about 2:45 a.m. a 2001 Hyundai Elantra was traveling east on State Route 633 (Stonehouse Mountain Road) when the driver lost control, ran off the left side of the roadway, and collided with a tree about a half-mile east of State Route 522 (Sperryville Pike).

The driver of the Hyundai, Hugo J. Mendez-Lopez, 28, of Culpeper, was not wearing a seat-belt, and was ejected from the vehicle, and died at the scene. The man’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiners in Manassas for examination and autopsy.

The crash remains under investigation by VSP Trooper C. Campbell.

VSP was assisted by VSP’s Division 2 Accident Reconstruction Team.
