A Berryville man died Sunday in a plane crash near Front Royal.

A Berryville man died Sunday afternoon after the plan he piloting crashed near the Front Royal-Warren County Airport.

Virginia State Police Senior Trooper R. Riggs responded to a report of a plane crash in Warren County occurring at 1:37 p.m. on Feb. 9 in the 400 block of Stokes Airport Road, according to a state police news release.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a glider aircraft was attempting to land or take off, and collided with several trees.

The pilot, Peter C. Maynard, 65, died at the scene of the crash as a result of his injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were notified of the crash that remains under investigation. No one on the ground was injured as a result of the crash.
