The 2nd Annual Northern Neck Beach Music Festival will be held September 14 on Town Hill in Colonial Beach. The fun begins at 11 am (gates open at 10:30) with live music, shag dance lessons, dance contest, silent auction, food, and beverages.

“We had a ton of fun last year and a great turnout,” says Festival Co-Chair Joyce Gunderson, who has hosted The Rhondels at private parties and events. “Colonial Beach is a natural venue for beach music!” The style incorporates rhythm and blues, pop, soul, a little rock and roll, and maybe some disco.

New This Year—3 bands, premier tents, party tent grounds!

Beach music bands, Feature Attraction Band (F.A.B.), The Rhondels, and The Embers keep fans on their feet. Don’t know how to shag dance? No problem, there will be dance lessons and even a contest. Vendors will offer food and beverages, including beer and wine, for purchase.

Originating in the Carolinas, “beach music” is associated with The Carolina Shag, a style of swing dance that debuted around 1946. Shag experienced a transition in the 60s and 70s with a resurgence in popularity in the 80s. Today, new, original beach music is still produced and enjoyed, particularly in the coastal regions of the Southeastern US.

Hosted by the Colonial Beach Community Foundation, with support from the Colonial Beach Chamber of Commerce and Colonial Beach Recreation Association, proceeds benefit the non-profit Foundation, which raises funds for community projects and to enhance the quality of life for local residents.

A limited number of Premier Tents will be available for rental as well as reserved and general admission party ground tent spaces to bring your own tent for the day.

Tickets can be purchased online via for $35. Early bird rates until September 1. After September 1, tickets are $40 each and $50 at the gate the day of the event. Held rain or shine (no refunds). Bring ID, your dancing shoes and a chair. No outside food or beverages. Sponsorships, VIP tickets and lodging packages are available by contacting
