Post 156 continues hot hitting

The Orange American Legion Post 156 baseball team continued a strong summer last week, splitting four games. The squad stands at 11-7 overall this season with four games remaining before the district tournament.

Last week, Orange defeated Massaponax 10-0 and Fluvanna 6-1. Post 156 fell to Staunton and Albermarle.

Led by several CCHS players, Orange has swung the bat well all season. According to the team’s Web site, Jeremy Brown is hitting .491, with seven doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI. Brown’s batting average would rank him third in the state, but he is six plate appearances short of the minimum 68 required to be ranked.

Recently graduated CCHS first baseman Hunter Kenney, honorable mention all-Northwest Region during the scholastic season, is hitting .457 with seven RBI.

Rising senior Trevor Funk, named all-district at shortstop for CCHS, has continued to swing the bat well for Post 156. He is hitting .422 with two triples, a home run and 19 RBI.

Robbie Whitmer has added strong defense in the outfield for Orange.

The Blue Devils players have made big contributions on the mound for Post 156. Cody Whitlock is 1-1 with 30 strike outs in 25 innings. Brown is 1-2 with 29 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched. Funk is 1-0 with four strikeouts in three innings.

Orange hosts Spotsylvania Tuesday, Culpeper Wednesday and Courtland Thursday before heading to Massaponax Saturday.
