It was easier than they ever expected or hoped, but the Culpeper Red Devils were able to claim their second consecutive Apple Valley League baseball title Sunday.

The Red Devils were scheduled to play the championship game at American Legion Field, but by midafternoon the  Red Devils found themselves without an opponent to take on. Culpeper became the first team in league history to win back-to-back championships, but Red Devils players had mixed emotions about taking the title by forfeit.

"It wasn't the way we wanted to do it," said pitcher Tim Wortman. "But we won it and we'll be back again next year."
