CCHS track athletes headed to regional meet

Eleven CCHS athletes qualified for next week’s Northwest Region track meet at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville by finishing in the top six in an event at the Cedar Run District meet.

B.J. Minor was the team’s only individual champion at the district meet. He won the 100-meter dash in 11.26 seconds. He also punched his ticket to regionals in the 200, finishing fourth in 23.17 seconds.
Senior Kyle Majors jumped 21 feet, 9.75 inches to take second place in the long jump. Teammate Nick Donovan grabbed fourth place with a leap of 20 feet, 11.75 inches.

Donovan had a big day in all the jumping events, grabbing third in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet. Majors finished fifth in that event, jumping 6 feet.

Donovan repeated his fourth-place performance in the triple jump, going a distance of 41 feet, 7.75 inches. Teammate Cameron French was right behind in fifth place, jumping 41 feet, 3.75 inches.

Distance ace Steven Reynolds, one of the state’s top half-milers, elected to run the 1,600 at the district meet, finishing third in 4:33.39.

Chris Bush finished sixth in the 400-meter in 53.05 seconds. Thrower John Ross Hawkins threw the discus 124 feet to finish sixth in that event.

Four Devilettes advanced to the regional meet. Dira Hansen finished second in the high jump (5-0). Denae Rogers finished fifth in that same event (4-10).

Dominique Danquah and Meyhonia Layne finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Danquah crossed the line in a personal-best 12.87 seconds. Layne finished in 13.04 seconds.

The Devilettes finished sixth at the district meet with 30 points. The boys team totaled 75 points, good for fifth place.
