MIDLAND—With hot and humid conditions on Saturday, it would have been a good time to find some shade.
And wise counsel to stay out of the rough for golfers who played at the Kastle Greens Golf Course in Midland on Saturday, where all eight Cedar Run District teams teed off.
When it was over, last year’s regular-season and district tournament champions the Battlefield Bobcats sizzled with an impressive team score of 300, which was six strokes better than runner-up Loudoun Valley, which carded a 306.
Culpeper finished in the seventh spot, 69 strokes back of the leader with a 369.
Liberty (314) came in third followed by Osbourn Park (325), Fauquier (330) and Osbourn (339).
“The rough was one place you didn’t want to be,” CCHS coach Shirley Gray said. “The course played very long due to the recent rains. There was very little roll and the rough was five to eight inches tall.”
Still, Gray was impressed with the team totals.
“Battlefield’s score was unbelievable,” he said. “Loudoun Valley’s 306 was another great score.”
Twelve of the 48 golfers who played shot in the 70s on the 18-hole course where par is 72.
Derek Orshoski led the Blue Devils with an 86, while Tim Jocz shot a 91 and Tommy Jocz a 92.
Brad Johnson carded a 100 to round out the team total.
Tommy Jocz, who has led the team in four of its previous matches, had an off day and Orshoski, who led the team in two of its previous outings, has now paced the team in three matches.
“Our team’s score was respectable,” Gray said. “The golfers played under very tough conditions. The course played tough but the heat and humidity was a big factor for all the golfers. For us, this was a great learning experience.”
John Williams (73) of Battlefield was the top finisher, followed by Zach Louzon (73) of Osbourn Park, Scott Davidson (74) and Zack Bosse (74) of Loudoun Valley, Andrew Lister (75) of Battlefield, and Drew Smith (75) of Fauquier.
Culpeper, which is now 0-3 in tournament play and 3-5 in dual matches, returns to the links on Wednesday when the Blue Devils travel to the Virginia Oaks Golf Course to compete with district rivals Osbourn and Battlefield.
