CULPEPER — While many around Culpeper are looking forward to Friday’s football scrimmage between Eastern View High School and Culpeper County High School as the first meeting of the potential rivals, they may actually be surprised to know that it will actually be the second.
The Cyclones, the Blue Devils and the Cavaliers from Caroline County collided on the crisp green golf course at the Country Club of Culpeper on Monday.
As a team Culpeper shot a 193, followed by Caroline with a 202. Eastern View finished the match with a 229.
“Today’s match was just another step,” EVHS coach Craig Dennis said. “It was just another day of experience that we can build on.”
CCHS senior Tommy Jocz shot a 39 — just three over par — which was good enough to make him the day’s top finisher.
“Tommy showed how important he is to our team today,” CCHS coach Shirley Gray said. “He adds a lot of leadership ability, experience and consistency to our team.”
Jocz was shooting even par through eight holes, but an errant shot that landed on a tree root on the ninth hole resulted in a triple bogey, ruining his near perfect outing.
Culpeper’s Derek Orshoski, who shot a 44, was the second overall finisher, while Caroline’s Freddie Colemen finished third with a 45.
EVHS freshman Joe Murphy was once again the Cyclones’ top finisher, shooting a 50. Sophomore Stephen Grotz finished on his heels with a 54.
“Even though he’s a little upset with himself right now, Joe is a very confident player,” Dennis said. “You always need guys like that on your team.”
The Cyclones were hampered with a lot of penalties during the match, according to Dennis.
“A lot of guys follow bad shots with another bad shot,” Dennis said. “Our guys just have to learn how to keep their focus so that doesn’t happen.”
The Blue Devils will be in action again on Aug. 26 at 4 p.m. when they host Liberty.
“I’m really pleased that even though we’re young, our scores are coming down,” Gray said. “The most important thing is to try and improve each time out.”
The Cyclones will travel to the Cannon Ridge golf course in Fredericksburg on Wednesday for a match against James Monroe.
