Culpeper County High School golf coach Shirley Gray said Monday’s Cedar Run District preseason mini-tournament at Loudoun Golf and Country Club might be a good indicator for how the season will go.
If he’s right, last year’s top two teams will battle for the district title once again. Host Loudoun Valley won the tournament with a 304, two strokes better than Battlefield.
Fauquier finished third at 337 and Liberty came in fourth at 338. Osbourn shot a 355 to nudge ahead of Osbourn Park at 364 and Culpeper rounded out the team scoring in seventh place after shooting a 408.
Tommy Jocz led the Blue Devils with a 93, twenty strokes back of the winner, Loudoun Valley’s Brandon DeLeonardis. Teammate Scott Davidson finished second with a 74 for the Vikings, tying with Battlefield’s Andrew Lister.
Greg Pappas of Fauquier shot a 77 to tie Justin Riley and Brent Richborg, both of Battlefield.
Derek Orshoski, who played in the No. 1 spot for CCHS, shot a 99 in his varsity debut and Brad Johnson finished with a 107 for Culpeper. Freshman Mike Hedlund rounded out the Culpeper contingent with a 109.
“We were short handed,” Gray said.
“We have four people, but they lack experience. I’m very pleased with Brad Johnson and Mike Hedlund, who played varsity for the first time. They played on a tough course.
Gain some experience and the scores will come down.”
CCHS returns to action Wednesday in the Spotswood Invitational at Lake View Golf Course in Pen Lair. The 12-team tournament tees off at 9 a.m.
