Just as expected, Loudoun Valley and Battlefield battled it out for top honors and the Loudoun County Golf and Country Club, where Culpeper and its seven district foes played the Cedar Run District Tournament on Monday. The host Vikings shot a 300 to claim their first district title, while the Bobcats finished seven strokes back with a 307 for the runner-up spot.
Both teams advance to the Northwest Region Tournament set for October 14 in Triangle.
For Culpeper, the tournament signaled the end of its season. The Blue Devils (374) finished in seventh place and failed to qualify any players for the region tournament.
“Our team shot for the second time this season their best 18-hole score, which was a 374,” said Culpeper Head Coach Shirley Gray. “I feel that our golfers gave their best and they have come a long way since the beginning of the season. You just can’t take inexperienced golfers and compete with the strong teams of the district.”
Loudoun Valley, which also won the regular season championship after its one-stroke win over Battlefield in the teams’ head-to-head match-up a week ago, added district tournament laurels to its season behind team leader Zack Bosse, the district’s individual champion.
Bosse and Battlefield’s Andrew Lister both shot a 72 at the end of the 18-hole match, which forced a playoff round between the two golfers. Bosse won the playoff on the third hole.
Joining Bosse and Lister on the All-District Team were Austin Kaseman (75) of Loudoun Valley, Jordan Pastor (75) of Battlefield, Scott Davidson (76) of Loudoun Valley and Drew Smith (76) of Fauquier.
For the Blue Devils, Tommy Jocz paced the team with a round of 90 followed by Brad Johnson (91), Derek Orshoski (96) and Shane Griffin (97). Tim Jocz (100) and Morgan Green (118) played but their scores did not count toward the team total. Tommy Jocz and Orshoski are the only two senior members of this year’s Culpeper squad.
“Our golfers never gave up and they always tried their best,” said Gray. “They were a great group to work with and we are looking forward to next year.”
