After the first loss of the season, Madison County looked to rebound in their first district game against Clarke County at home last night. But it was the Eagles who went home happy with a 32-13 win over the Mountaineers.
The offense that had sparked Madison (5-2) to wins in its first five games was kept in check by the Eagles all night and the defense, which usually dominates the line of scrimmage, wasn’t able to stop a pair of Clarke rushers.
Sam Shiley ran for 151 yards and Grant Shaw picked up 165 on the ground for the Eagles, who moved into the driver’s seat for the Bull Run District crown.
Clarke County utilized a shotgun formation with Shiley and Shaw, usually a wide receiver as the two in the backfield and it was never clear which player would receive the snap.
Shiley also threw four passes and completed two for 15 yards and had a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Shaw touchdown runs of one, six and 36 yards.
For Madison, junior running back Logan Terrell had a big 38-yard run in the second quarter for a touchdown with Andre Parker hitting the extra point. The Mountaineers tried to rally with quarterback Dustin Kirby hitting receiver Sam Utz for the 49 yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.
The touchdown toss was Kirby’s only pass of the evening after replacing Will Taylor at quarterback in the fourth quarter. Taylor went 11 for 21 on the night for 91 yards.
Junior tight end Dylan Shifflette made a big contribution for the Mountaineers catching four passes for 32 yards. Ryan Banks also had a big evening with three catches for 36 yards and Terrell had 22 yards on three catches.
Terrell also had 94 yards on 14 rushes and Devon Boone had 73 yards on 14 carries.
With the loss, Madison fell to 5-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Bull Run District while Clarke County moves to 6-2 and 2-0. Madison will look to get back on track next week against George Mason, which lost at Eastern View on Friday.
