Eastern View’s first season in the Battlefield District ended with eight Cyclones earning all-district honors.
Senior Courtney Owens made the first-team along with a pair of junior, Morgan Martin and Jackie Bedsaul. Seniors Gracie Gilmore, Liz Crane and Taylor Queen were each named to the second team for Eastern View and two more seniors, Ana Gonzalez and goalkeeper Nicole Woodworth, were earned honorable mention.
“We were extremely proud of the girls that made the teams,” EVHS coach Peggy Allen said. “I was disappointed that Nicole didn’t get placed on first or second team, but I’m a little biased. In my opinion Nicole is one of the most agile goalies around. She dives and goes after every ball.”
Queen led the Cyclones with 14 goals on the season and Owens was also an offensive threat, but it was the defense that led Eastern View all season long, and the Cyclones had forced a shutout of Grafton in Monday’s regional playoff game until Martin was injured in the final minutes of a 1-0 loss.
“Our defense has just been astounding,” Allen said. “I’m sure that was a blow to our defense when Morgan went out. They are such a family out there and it was a shame Morgan was injured in the last couple of minutes of such a tight game. That group of defenders kept us in a lot of games.”
Allen said that it was impressive that Eastern View was able to land so many players on all-district teams after joining one of the toughest districts in the state.
“These are coaches that have been around and really know the game,” Allen said. “That’s why it means so much when you get three voted onto the first team.”
