Culpeper went into Monday afternoon’s field hockey game against visiting Osbourn Park looking for its second Cedar Run District win.
But the Blue Devilettes ran into a tough Yellow Jackets team that beat Culpeper 7-0.
Osbourn Park knocked off CCHS once last season on the way to a second-place finish in the Cedar Run. This season the Jackets were able to repeat the feat. Jessica Lowman and Lauren Stewart each scored two goals for the Jackets.
“They are a good team,” CCHS coach Robin Bolt said. “They only way we are going to get better is to play good teams. That’s just the growing pains we’re going through.”
Lowman got the scoring started early on for OPHS, putting the ball in the goal with 28:15 left in the first half.
The Jackets then got a pair of goals from Stewart and scores from Margot Holland and Megan Daniels to take a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Lowman scored her second of the game with less than five minutes gone in the second half and the Yellow Jackets rounded out the scoring with 11:11 remaining when Katelyn Basalla scored to make it a 7-0 lead.
“The girls, I don’t think played to their potential in the first half,” Bolt said. “They put their heads down a little too soon. They got two on us in the second half, but that’s a lot better than the first half. It comes back to the inexperience and putting people where they are most comfortable.”
Despite the tough luck on Monday, Bolt said she though the young Blue Devilettes (1-6, 1-2 Cedar Run) where making strides.
“I do think they are coming along,” Bolt said.
“They just got to learn. They keep making some of the same mistakes, but it’s just a growing process. They have made improvements and we’re focused on what improvements we’re making.”

I was having trouble commenting on the article written about the EVHS field hockey team’s trip to Herndon- so I am posting it here. I just wanted to say that I am highly disappointed that my daughter received the MVP for the tournament- 12 teams-and 200+ girls- and that was not mentioned. I wonder who gives the paper information on these tournaments, and away games??
Thanks- Maria Woodworth- mom to Goalie Nicole Woodworth
