CCHS has seven earn district honors

Robin Bolt entered her first season as Culpeper County High School’s field hockey coach with no seniors and only a couple of players with any hockey experience. She’ll enter her second season with seven returning all-district players.

The Blue Devilettes had three players make first-team All-Cedar Run District, another landed on the second team and three more earned honorable mention. Jessie Nerkowski, the lone returning varsity player off last year’s CCHS team, made the first team along with goalkeeper Miranda Phipps and defender Lauren Mills.

“It was very exciting for me to find out,” Bolt said. “The coaches in our district saw us in the beginning and saw us at the end and saw the improvement we made.”

Carley Jones was named to the second team for Culpeper and Courtney Daymude, Courtney Hanna and MaryKate Lanham each took home honorable mention when the district coaches got together and voted for postseason honors.

After essentially starting the program over from scratch after longtime coach Peggy Allen and several varsity players moved to Eastern View High School, the Blue Devilettes picked up a pair of victories and surprised some people with how competitive they were by the end of the season. But Bolt wasn’t shocked to see her players listed when the postseason honors came out.

“I wouldn’t say I was surprised,” Bolt said. “I knew we had some really good players and I wasn’t sure where they would end up, but it was good to get three on the first team.”

Now CCHS is looking forward to next season, when it might not be the underdog in the district.

“I’m very happy with the way things went,” Bolt said. “Most coaches have to deal with losing seniors and I had a bunch of ninth and tenth graders. And the girls that didn’t get named to teams it was because there were so many good players at those positions. We’re excited about all the players we have coming back.”
