The funny thing is that when Brandon Scott began his sophomore season with the CCHS baseball team this spring, he didn’t even have a place in the lineup.
Fast forward four months and Scott has established himself as one of the top infielders in the region.
“To be honest, I didn’t even expect to start,” Scott said. “I didn’t expect to play as well as I did.”
Originally slated to back up middle infielders Trevor Funk and Ross Karnes on the Blue Devils squad, Scott moved into the lineup when Karnes missed some time early in the season.
The speedy contact hitter quickly settled into the No. 2 spot in the batting order and began wreaking havoc on the Cedar Run District.
A patient hitter, he’s worked hard to develop his ability to hit to all fields. Once on base, Scott is always a threat to run.
After helping the Blue Devils to 10-10 regular season mark, the awards started piling up for Scott. He was named first-team all-district and honorable mention all-region at second base. More recently, he was named to the Free-Lance Star’s all-area team.
“My confidence is going up,” Scott said. “I try not to get too much confidence because I don’t want to get big-headed.”
The secret, Scott said, has been a careful attention to detail. He’s always looking for ways to improve. This summer, for instance, he’s spending time at shortstop, working on developing his arm strength.
It helps that Scott comes from a baseball family. His father, Kyle, coaches the American Legion on which Scott plays. His older brother, Cameron, was a two-time all-state selection at Notre Dame Academy and plays second base for Old Dominion University.
“They teach me everything they know,” Scott said of his family. “They help me out as best they can. … I want to do as good as (Cameron) did.”
Scott will head to Eastern View High School next year, where he’ll have the chance to play for the inaugural Cyclones team, but for now his focus is the more immediate future. He has a lot of work to do this summer.
“I’ve just been trying to get better at everything,” Scott said. “You’ve got to try to be the best at whatever you do.”
