» SUMMARY: Local officials deserve credit for finding what appears to be an effective process for dealing with a   criminal element within the local illegal immigrant population.

While most of us slept, dozens of law enforcement officials including town officers, sheriff’s deputies, state agents, members of the regional Blue Ridge Narcotics Task Force and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents fanned out across the area in search of criminals Tuesday morning.

Targeted were 19 people who are habitual offenders and gang members, as well as some who are in this country illegally again after being deported. It wasn’t a raid designed to pick up illegal aliens, it was designed to root out a criminal element.

When the early morning had turned to full day, they found five of the suspects, and now those five face justice.

In the grand scheme of things, five illegal aliens arrested is only a fraction of those possibly living in our area.

But what this does do is take people who have been deemed dangerous — people who are habitual offenders — off our streets.

You have to understand the operation to appreciate what was done.

Our law enforcement agencies deserve credit for formulating a strategy that attacks a problem and then sticking with it.
When illegal aliens get into the legal system, Commonwealth’s Attorney Gary Close, Culpeper Police Chief Scott Barlow and Sheriff Jim Branch provided ICE with documentation.

You could see their hard work in the mountain of paperwork that documented these suspects and others.

When working with a federal agency like ICE, you have to be diligent and build a strong paper trail. Local officials have done that well.

You get the feeling that this isn’t the last one of these raids we will see. They will stay the course, officials say.

Judging from the smaller than normal crowds of day laborers gathered along Bus. 29 in the days following the raid, these arrests may have sent the desired message: If you are in this country illegally and break the law here, you are not welcome.

Why is it a big mystery about telling what these five guys did? I have seen zero evidence that these guys are gang members.  I’ve seen no evidence whatsoever that they committed a single crime in Culp.  Isn’t anyone curious?

I agree with the fact of ‘do not hire’ and they will all go home. Right/Sure and thier children born/raised, living here will follow one day also after coming of age to vote. Sure! Remember they do come from a 3rd world country. Poverty reigns but do you really think there is any solution at Lower Level Gov. such as Using our Town to make Headlines… Why is there not one single article about the effects this has on our Community of Hispanics. Very few, if any articles are written on the ‘Effects of Harrassment’ towards Hispanics. Or should I say “Hate Crimes” of past and present and in the process. A few months back an Elderly Hispanic man had his throat slashed , but was an article written? He was only one of the infamous walkin the street at night, with the misfortune to run into such Friendliness. The Town Cryer needs to tone down and see the effects this is having or soon we will be known as Citizens of a Not so ‘Friendly Town with Low Crime’ but a Town where all The Freaks whom wish to Stone/rape/rob/stab/slash/ their neighbors can come and Shave Heads and Practice Predjudicial Acts of unkindness towards Human Beings. I personally, am fed up with reading all this.

While I’m sure that the ICE raid took some criminals and gang members off the street. But to believe that the declining numbers of illegals on bus 29 is related is naive at best. The reason that the illegals are leavins is because the work is drying up and they can’t afford to stay here. If you want to stop illegal imagration don’t hire illegals they will go home.
