OUR VIEW: County should OK position of fire marshal

» SUMMARY: Establishing a fire marshal position within the county’s building department makes sense.

As Culpeper County officials consider whether to create the position of fire marshal, we can’t help but think it’s a good idea whose time has come.

And while economic times are tight, the upside will likely outweigh the relatively small expenditure of taxpayers’ dollars.

As it stands now, comprehensive enforcement of fire codes is done by the state fire marshal’s regional office in Sperryville. But with Culpeper’s rapid growth, it makes little sense to depend on a state employee in a neighboring county who is being pulled in many directions.

With the right training, a fire marshal can also serve as an arson investigator.

And that’s important because the county’s last arson investigator, a 10-year-employee of the Sheriff’s Office, was terminated when Sheriff Jim Branch took office in January.

Ever since, this county has been in a tight spot, operating without an arson investigator (the State Police currently handles that task) and, obviously, without a fire marshal. Now is the time to do something about it.

Designating a fire marshal to work in the county’s building department would be a good start. We encourage the Culpeper County Personnel Committee, which is researching the proposal with the county’s top building official, to recommend approval to the Board of Supervisors.

This problem would have not occured had our wounderful Sheriff Jim Branch re-appointed St. Clair.  How many cases went unsolved when he was employed. Scott Jenkins would have kept St. Clair employed and probably had him work as a Fire Marshall also.
Oh what a tangled web we weave.  I guess the dept. is better off with less crime not that St.Clair and Stanley are working for other depts.

Every time I try to enter TARGET through those locked north side doors. LOWES blocking access around the building with pallets of crap. Me parking at the curb in front of the new ABC store as there is no Fire Lane. Greasy dumpsters at all the chinky restaurants. The potential for a fire access/egress disaster is high. Brain cells of Culpeparians is low. Hire the Guy yesterday!

It is ridiculous for the county to spend money for that position! The sheriff’s department had one. But the new sheriff let him go when he became sheriff! Train another deputy, it will be much cheaper to pay a deputy a little more money then create a new position.

I think with the economy the way it is and no one can even get a raise; that it would be foolish to add another position in our county. How many arson cases have been investigated in our county within the last year? How much growth has our county had? It seems to me that people are leaving the county considering all of the foreclosures. The taxpayers are already paying for the State Police, I feel that they can handle the job if we need it. We don’t need one at this time. Obviously someone is already in mind for this position. Let me guess???
