» SUMMARY: With the start of the college football season fast approaching, local athletes have done well to put themselves in a position to compete.

The commonwealth is abuzz. In just a few short days the Virginia Cavaliers will play host to the Trojans from the University of Southern California in one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening week of the college football season.

But fans aren’t the only ones anxiously awaiting the matchup. At Virginia, local players Terrence Fells-Danzer and Curt Orshoski have waited more than a year for Saturday to come. After redshirting for the Cavs last season, Fells-Danzer and Orshoski — both Culpeper County High School graduates — are among the Wahoos who might get on the field to play against the mighty Trojans.

While many high-profile Virginia players spent their offseasons getting into trouble with the law or with the school, no negative news came out about the Culpeper duo. Some players who might have competed for playing time with Fells-Danzer and Orshoski found themselves booted from the team in the offseason, meanwhile, Virginia coach Al Groh was taking the time to call CCHS coach Greg Martz to rave about the progress of the former Blue Devils.

As of Tuesday morning, there was no official depth chart out for the Cavaliers, but some unofficial listings had Fells-Danzer as a second-team linebacker. Orshoski is rumored to be in the mix for playing time at fullback.

It’s quite likely that one or both of the Culpeper players will make their college debut Saturday in front of more than 60,000 at Scott Stadium and a national television audience watching from their homes — quite a jump from the days of taking on Cedar Run District competition at Broman Field.

Congratulations to Orshoski and Fells-Danzer, who have made the community proud and still have an opportunity to accomplish much more.
