We must act now to combat illegal immigration

Salvatore Torelli’s letter April 29 (“287(g) not cost effective for town”) talks about how we will get money to deal with our illegal immigration problems, as others have done.

Well, let’s find ways to raise money for this problem by having events or fund-raisers. There are ways. We need to do something quicker than we’re doing it now.

This is going to be a fatal blow to America in the next few decades if we don’t get on the ball soon. I feel the presence of illegal aliens in our country is why we’re in this recession now. If our governments — local, state and federal — don’t start resolving this, they better get started building many, many more prisons.

Also, I find it kind of funny that the letter states, “Day laborers are not criminal illegal aliens.”

If you’re illegal, you’re a criminal. Please, people, start coming to your senses before it’s too late.

Wade 11:03 AM, I strongly disagree with you. Truth does matter. So who says what, when, where and why may not matter to someone but it certainly does matter to me. Based on what you believe you see a problem. But, I don’t believe what you apparently do or see the problem that you state.  S53 6:02 PM, truthfully as rjma 11:42 am states, no such ‘facts’ were reported. Dr. Cox immediately refuted what was reported he had said, and the Culpeper Hospital Admin did not report a $2 mil cost. You call US citizens ‘anchor babies’ I refer to them as US citizens and Cantor hasn’t a clue about the % of undocumented aliens in our jails. And, YES as I stated, NO ONE is forcing their way across our borders, a topic not addressed in your Mexican drug wars cite.

senseit- No such “facts” were reported.  First of all, the schools have no idea how many illegal immigrant children are in the CCPS.  They do have estimates of children receiving ESL services.  And I know you want to believe that they are one in the same but surely you know that is not the case.  When that article/letter was printed, I seem to recall that the supt. immediately denied the claim in a reader comment, suggesting basically what I wrote above.  Same story with the Hosp. They have no idea which patient is illegal immigrant.  That “quote” came second hand from a bos member not anything from a hospital administrator. You may be entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts.

OPA,Doesn’t matter which group reported it, i’m sure they are ignorant, racist and probably (gasp) Patriotic as well. The figures can be found all over the net with plenty to back it up. Even two economists picked by the wsj agreed action needed to be taken against illegal alien employers. Looks like a problem we’re all going to have to live with, regardless of what we think.

Brian, Ktricks “facts” were reported in CSE several weeks back w/ Hosp Admin estimating @ $2m in costs. Also estimated that over 600 illegals were in Culpeper schools. Now, although they were estimates, they came from reliable sources and even if they were off by 50% you’d be still be talking about huge costs! Juless,  CBO report said @ 2M in schools nationwide and another 3M anchor babies, Congressman Cantor reported 17% in jails. I’d take those sources over any agenda driven “think tank” anyday. And Opa, Opa, Opa, nowones forcing their way across border? http://www.gopusa.com/news/2008/may/0514_mexican_violence.shtml

S53 5:03 PM, it was Mr. Kelly who misstated ‘if you’re illegal, you’re a criminal.’ It was a false statement drawing deserved fire as are yours. We do not have ‘millions of invaders’ here. Invaders by definition are people who ‘enter by force in order to conquer.’ There are no undocumented aliens here who entered either by force or to conquer us. They all entered peacefully most to work for us. And, our judicial system proves that they are 5X more law abiding than are our natives. ‘Facts’ prove they are contributing billions of $ to our economy, large parts of which are dependent upon them. For the vast majority of Americans, merely hiring one of the about 7.5 million undocumented workers here would neither be a ‘felony’ nor be prosecuted. As for the status of any and all men ‘standing around,’ under our law it is and must be assumed that they are all legitimate and law-abiding. So why ask?

Wade 8:07 AM, actually you are mistaken. What ‘think tank’ studies do that? Name them. This figure ($9000 each annually) was claimed in a report compiled and released by Edwin Rubenstein president of ESR Research on April 8, 2008 in conjunction with The Social Contract Press (SCP) a prominent proponent of immigration reduction and population control founded by John Tanton (of FAIR) designated a hate group by the SPLC.  It covered both documented and undocumented immigrants and (among others) did not take into account the taxes paid by immigrants. As I’ve previously reported, our recession and the amount we are paying in interest on our rapidly increasing federal debt is due to Republican spending and borrowing since Reagan, not to immigration.

Actually OPA, think tank studies show the immigrants cost the U.S. taxpayer $9,000 each annually, or $364 billion dollars a year. No wonder we’re in recession and our interest on Federal debt is approaching 1 million bucks a minute.

KTrick 8:13 PM, get real. Most (probably all) undocumented aliens here do pay most supportive taxes aiding our communities. In fact, they pay more taxes than they cost us as just about all-reliable studies we have conducted have found. And in fact they do not have ‘lots of children’ being educated here, and most of their children are US citizens born here like most of us; all ours to educate. We native born are ‘taxing the county with local law enforcement and court costs’ when we violate laws 5X more often per capita than do they. No matter which way you choose to look and/or to see, and believe what ever you will, the simple truth is undocumented aliens contribute more than they cost us no matter what language they or we speak.

Ktrick do you have facts and data to back up your claims?  Since Culpeper Hospital and the schools don’t have information on illegal aliens how do you come to that conclusion?  Ignorance?  I can’t make those claims on illegals.  Neither can anyone else.  You are making assumptions with no evidence.  Those assumptions come from being ignorant.  Schools are prohibited from asking citizenship status on children.  Have you not read Plyler vs Doe?  Go read it please.  Most local arrests are not illegal aliens.  Another statement that you can’t back up.  There is a limit to what the local government can do.  You don’t get the point.

senseit53 your are not logical.  You are just ignorant.  What facts are you faced with?  The facts you make up in your head to prove your useless point?  You have been proved wrong time and time again but still come back for more.  Only fools don’t know when to stop.

Allen Kelly is incorrect about illegal immigration.  He got the truth from Mr. Torelli and won’t accept it.  He is unhappy about the town election.  What’s interesting is that he lives in the county.  He is a very unhappy individual.

Mr. Kelly- It’s so sad to hear from such a sad & hate filled person. Day laborers are not deranged freaks out to take your home, your wife, or your job. They are people trying to have some quality in their life. If you look back in the history of this country you’ll see there have always immigrants coming to this country, legally & illegally. There was a time when hate was projected toward the Irish, the Germans, the Italians, the Chinese…..it goes on & on. Try to open your mind & your heart. Focus your displeasure & frustration where it belongs-write your government, join a protest, & research your information. Try donating your time to help others. By giving more of yourself, you’ll feel happier & less threatened. Good luck.
