This is my first letter to the editor and probably my last. At 82 years of age and as a native of Culpeper who served on the town police force for 7 1/2 and who worked for the ABC Store here in town for 32 years, I certainly have witnessed a lot of change; some good, and some not so good.
As a World War II veteran, I have had the pleasure of attending the Warrior Banquet at the American Legion in honor of the young men and women returning from defending our nation. It has been especially nice getting to know Jerry Beckett during these dinners.  Mr. Beckett goes out of his way to make sure that the young soldiers returning are honored as they should be.  When Mr. Beckett talks with the WWII veterans, and the veterans of other wars, he is always so kind and helpful.  Yes, our town and country have changed. However, it has been heart-warming to meet a genuinely nice person in Mr. Beckett. Being kind should never change.
I plan to vote in the upcoming Town Council election. I will vote for those who I feel will make a difference.

I have a question for ktrick how will you check who is illeagle and who is not. Will I have to carry identification with me all the time because my last name is hispanic and my skin is tan. I immigrated to this country from Spain and have been a leagle citizen for more than 50 years. There are many more hispanics that are leagally here also will you make them carry ID also and randomlly stop them for ID checks. I just went to my sons graduation from Parris Island he is now officially a US Marine defending yours and Mr. jenkins rights to be bigots and to ccreate hard feelings in a community for your own gratification perhaps Bennet and his cronies ought to check the rosters at Parris Island there were many hispanics graduating to defend ours and there country.

I’m a bit confused KTrick.  Can you please tell me what local, state or county law that requires that we should check for green cards and citizenship in Culpeper?  You sound rather foolish dont you think?  Here is what will bankrupt this town.  Unconstitutional loitering ordinances, targeting day laborers soliciting for work.(already ruled so by Federal judge in NY and NJ)  Laws like Hazleton, which by the way were halted in Federal Court.  How difficult is that to understand?  Veterans are always in my heart to include both current and past ones.  Veterans have nothing to do with illegal immigration issues.  Non of the HPC candidates will make a positive difference in this community.  How can someone who yells at people in front of the post office and says “vote or shut your face” be considered heart warming?  Is Robert Jenkins the father of Steve Jenkins?  If so, that would explain his opinion.  I too will vote in the upcoming town election.  I won’t vote for anyone from HPC.  I will make sure my vote keeps people in office that are looking out for my best interest.  And my vote will never support HPC candidates or Steve Jenkins.

KTrick maybe you can explain how the town can enforce everyone having a green card.  They can’t You are missing the real point.  What elected officials do locally can put their town in litigation and really get their tails sued.  Everyone knows and understands that they are illegal.  Have we not seen suggestions all along from Steve Jenkins that would not only bankrupt the town but also have the citizens paying for years to come?  No they should not break the law and enter this country illegally.  Who’s fault is it that they are here?  I would say the federal government.

I highly doubt the town treasury would become “bankrupt” in enforcing a law that requires residents of Culpeper to either be citizens or carry a green card.
The key word (again) is “illegal” - you used it in your reply - these people are here ILLEGALLY.
While I have no problem with them personally, I feel that if I don’t break the law, then neither should they be allowed to.
Unless there is an accepted double standard….?

By the way, these American Legion guys contribute a lot to enrich our community.
Do you welcome home veterans too?

I understand that Mr. Jenkins would like to elect people to council who will vote with his son, Steve, but I reckon not everyone else will be comfortable of the thought of what that will do to the town treasury.

Was that an endorsement?  OK, I’m sure Mr. Beckett is nice to veterans.  But you say you will vote for those who you feel will make a difference.  You don’t say if that includes Mr. Beckett.  PS.  You’re only 82.  Write again.

Oh Beckett will make a difference all right. Maybe not the kind you hoped for. If Beckett had his way, he would bankrupt the town treasury to fight those evil illegal immigrants. Everything else, like it is to Steve Jenkins (any relation Mr. Jenkins) is unimportant. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.
