Toting a gun at council meeting is not necessary

I am in complete agreement with Mr. Meriwether’s Sept. 18 column, although his attempt at humor may have offended some northern Virginians.
Gene Kidwell hit it right on the head that they have no business in our business (“Council should only admit town residents,” Spet. 19).
I see no reason why a citizen would need to go into council toting a gun on their hip. I would find it offensive in any setting. I am not against private gun ownership, but I certainly don’t see the need to walk around with a gun on display like an officer of the law — which these citizens are not — and most certainly not when addressing our Town Council.
I don’t see whey someone from northern Virginia would need to be addressing our Town Council.
I agree that guns should be banned just like they are in the courthouse, and town or county residents only — or persons with direct business — should be allowed in the meetings. And wasn’t it intereting that someone from Dumfries agreed with the gun toting? I’m glad we live in the so-called “boonies!”

It’s their “right” - and they realy mean it when they say “from my cold, dead hands . . . .“ I can exercise my “rights” anywhere in the US, such as flag burning or packing heat at a Council meeting, but I have the decency and basic decorum to know neither is appropriate.

I find Ms. Drown’s comments about not wanting the input of citizens from other counties interesting. A few months ago she wrote another letter to the editor bemoaning that the Culpeper School Board did not get input from Prince William County. She wrote, “...Are you [Culpeper School Board] too caught up in your own personalities and egos to let another county provide you with good information…“
It’s a good thing when citizens, wherever they are from, fight to preserve the rights of their fellow citizens.

They carry for one simple reason, they are legally allowed to carry those firearms for self protection, its called the Second Amendment.

Sandra why don’t you take look at Jenkin’s letter and see if yu still have the same opinion. Meriwether wants to ignore laws and encourage outside interference when it suits him. Are you the same way? It is also not for you to determine threasons/when I carry. “Officer of the law” just shows you really know nothing about guns and you are afraid of what you don’t know. The people you need to be afraid of are the ones carrying concealed and willingly ignore the law. Ever think about that?
