Why did the Culpeper County School Board meet at a retreat in another county?
Of all the schools and other public meeting areas that are available here, and they decide to go out to another county. No wonder our budget is in such poor shape. Things are not thought through very clearly.

You mention the School Board, but fail to mention the Board of Supervisors who met on private property in Madison.

I have actually looked into this. The cost is only for food at Graves Mountain and the room is free when you buy a meal. So the School Board retreat was relatively inexpensive. Compared to Social Services retreats at Wintergreen Resort and the Board of Supervisors at The Homestead Luxury Resort this is pretty cheap. I do agree that access to the public is an issue when boards go away. The Supervisors recently retreated at an undisclosed location in Madison County. I am way more concerned about what public boards do in the county. 2 by 2 meetings, countless and unnecessary closed meetings, meetings on short notices are all worse violations of open government practices.

The writer sounds like a person who has never been to a retreat. The idea is to isolate you from the day-to-day stuff and make it hard for you to call a “time-out” to quickly deal with such. The focus is on the job at hand and not everyting else that goes on in most people’s lives. There is also the team building aspect as well as the hope that the semi-isolation will encourage the particiapnts to get to know each other on a more personal level.
