Political wrapper on newspaper was in poor taste

I am canceling my subscription to your paper. The decision has been a long time coming, but the final straw was the way Tuesday’s paper was wrapped in a political advertisement. It was biased and insulting.
The Star-Exponent pulled this same stunt on the day of the sheriff’s election.
I can no longer, in good conscience, support this paper. The little blurb you put on the bottom of the front page of the newspaper was a joke. If you did not support it, then why do it?
I urge others to take a stand against this kind of behavior from our local paper. There are other papers worth buying — The Free Lance-Star or the Washington Post — and if you want local news, use the Internet.
One last thing. To allow J. Michael Sharman to have a column every week spewing his personal agenda is disgusting.

There was a wrapper on the Free Lance-Star? Mine came in a blue plastic bag because it rained during the night. I pulled the bag out of the paper box, brought it to the house and tossed the whole thing in the recycle box, unopened and unread.

Don’t subscribe to the Free Lancep-Star then, because they had the same wrapper. While I didn’t like it anymore than you did and didn’t agree with the message, the NRA has a right to get their message out. The newspaper is a for profit enterprise and with shrinking ad revenue looks for other ways to make money. If you want to cancel your subscription because of content, or lack of it, that makes sense. The wrapper was obnoxious and I thought the publisher in his front page statement made it clear why it was there.

Why shouldn’t Sharman have a column? As long as it appears in the Op/Ed section, the newspaper is not being biased. People need to understand this and not get so upset. There are many other columnists that appear in this section of the paper. Do you want them to go away too, or just the ones you don’t agree with?

No doubt the Star Exponent uses its paper to spread its point of view instead of just reporting the news. This is not illegal, just unethical and its the reason I cancelled long ago. The email ad the day of the Sheriff’s race was the last straw for me.

Thankfully I didn’t see the ad. My paper came in a blue plastic sack and the whole thing went into the recycle box, unopened and unread.

I’m not real clear about what kind of ad you’re talking about. Was it printed on the outside of the plastic bag the paper came in? Why would that be different from any other commercial ad? Newspapers are in the ad business. I’m not sure why this particular ad is so bad.

I totally agree the Sharman rants are generally disgusting They are also illogical, poorly researched, shallow, and of questionable motive. However, he has the right to say it. The CSE has the right to print it. You have the right to not purchase the paper.

Belinda,
I suggest you move to China or somewhere where everything is censored. This is America. We have our ideas both “personal agendas” and “advertisements” in the public. The SE is not biased they present views from all over the spectrum.
We would not be here if patriots like Thomas Paine and Ben Franklin had everyone cancel their subscriptions everytime someone felt publications were in poor taste.
