As for Mr. Meriwether’s suggestion to close West Street for Halloween (“Town Council trick or treat,” Sept. 18): Why not close the whole town? That wouldn’t bother me since I try not to drive through town any more than I have to. And I, for one, am tired of hearing him mention how he grew up in the “Deep South” among “hunters.” Does that make him an expert on everything concerning hunting and/or guns? I don’t see anything wrong with anyone of legal age legally carrying a weapon, as is their right according to the Constitution and the commonwealth of Virginia. That doesn’t make someone a “Bubba.” That sounds like a derogatory term to me. I believe it’s rude to call people names.
I’m glad Mr. Meriwether feels safe with Chief Barlow on the job, but as a woman in today’s world I can’t assume the police will be available to protect me, especially living out in the country. Therefore, my husband has taught me how to handle firearms to be able to protect myself and my children, should the need arise.
Even in new Culpeper, the urban “Camelot,” it might come in handy.
On another note, should the School Board upgrade the facilities at CCHS? As opposed to what? Letting the school continue to fall apart? Maybe we need another new high school, the last one was so affordable. We have money to waste, after all, since we can pay two superintendents.

Right on Cheryl, Meriwether is NOT an expert on guns, he doesn’t even know the meaning of brandishing as opposed to open carry. He is a typical gun hater with little to no knowledge of firearms so he is afraid of them and afraid of folks who carry them. My advice to him is do what Rosie O’Donnell does and hire five armed body guards to protect you and your family, then you won’t need a firearm to protect your family or property.
