If you look at the history of journalism, you will see reporters who have risked life and limb to chronicle wars. Yet in Culpeper, Mr.. Meriwether complains about citizens legally carrying handguns to a Town Council meeting as if he was in some kind of danger.
Disarming law-abiding citizens does nothing but leave them open to crime by violent criminals.
It is said that the pen is mightier than the sword, but if I am attacked by an armed criminal I would rather have a gun than a pen.
Taking the guns out of the hands of law-abiding citizens leaves the door open for senseless murders.

I am very offended and let down by anyone who thinks that guns in our town is a bigger issue then say the economy, or health or education. Wait, did I say education. Try to take my weapon, it will be from my cold dead fingers as the “old west” saying goes. Maybe what we need are smarter people in office. More educated people. I don’t shoot my weapons in town, I keep them for protection. Or maybe I should just cry out loud. That should scare the old ground hog away. Hey, what if we all yelled louder. Do you think these idiots will leave too?

This discussion has gone from almost funy to preposterous. Where in all this did Meriwether ever suggest that we disarm everyone. He just voiced his opinion about the need to carry guns into a public town council meeting. Some people, including someone from Doswell (again, not part of Culpeper) is weighing in about something they know nothing about and don’t live here to be concerned about. I guess the NRA will continue to deluge the paper with letters. I am just curious where all this came from about taking guns away from citizens. The issue was shooting guns in somewhat populated areas and Meriwether being uncomfortable with gun-toting citizens standing at the podium showing their weapons. He just felt it was unncessary to cary a gun to speak your piece.

Maybe we should all bring our shotguns to the next u-6 soccer match so everyone will feel really safe.
