Instead of cutting activities, schools should save gas

The Culpeper County School Board claims they can’t have certain activities and certain sports this year because of lack of funds — well I have an idea. Get rid of a few maintenance workers that you pay to milk your clock and ride all over town from school to school burning up high-priced gas.

I’ve been doing my own investigating and on many occasions I would follow them. Not only do they ignore our highway signs by running stop signs even in school zones, they ride school to school never even getting out of their vans. This is a disgrace to our school budget.

The School Board needs to install some kind of system in these vans so they can track their every move or just fire the supervisor.

I demand an investigation be done by the School Board.  And now that I’ve written this letter, compare your gas bills in the next couple of months to the gas bills from a few months ago. I bet you see a major change in your gas bill and, when you do, use it for our kids’ activities in all our schools.

I thought just the first floor was school board offices and the second floor was part of the middle school, I could be wrong, if so I totally agree that is a waste of space. Teachers are underpaid and not given the supplies that are needed, they should not have to purchase their own supplies. I agree admin needs to cut their spending instead of passing it on to the teachers by cutting thier benefits and pay.

Last Man Standing: I have stopped by the admin. building and I saw empty offices with unused desks & computers.
xobxr: What part of it is a “middle school”? Isn’t Floyd T. right behind it?
I didn’t see any kids in the admin. building at all and it was late morning.

nature lover: You are way-off track if you think people hate teachers and think they are the cause of the financial problems. Anyone with half a brain knows you are all underpaid and have far too many students on your hands, which takes away your effectiveness.

The problem lies with gigantic waste within the county administration, with people who don’t earn their paychecks, multiple offices that are furnished, climate-controled and have computers attracting dust.
But instead of trimming the fat and doing some introspection, they choose to cut teachers cost-of-living increases, skimp on supplies and now think they can cut sports and the arts.
In the meantime, they’ll drive their county cars with full tanks of county-paid fuel.
And not a single one of them will care enough to sacrifice ANY of their perks.

So yeah, we’re all jerks for wanting some cost control from within.Just raise our taxes and cut our kids’ programs instead!
Hooray for the county admins!

“Gone to the dogs”, teachers are actually trained to NOT “sit on their behinds” and many don’t until the end of the day. There are many reasons behind it, but since you know everything, I don’t feel the need to elaborate. Since you’re so knowledgeable, you should also know that many of the teachers use thier own money to buy dry erase markers and many other supplies to teach others children. I don’t know many jobs where people aren’t allowed to sit down at some point throughout the day. How about yours? Maybe your employer should dock your pay every time you sit down on your behind. By the way, students are actually learning…how do you think our schools stay open??? SOL’s are being passed, students are moving on to college and schools are acquiring accredidations. But once again you probably already know these things. Why do so many people hate teachers and place the blame on them for the budget issues that the county leaders have created. Teachers have no say over their pay, benefits etc. It’s all decided for them. If they do’t like it, a lot of them leave. So before you continue to grossly disrespect a once respected profession, make sure you know that your facts are 100% correct.  I sincerely apologize for your anger over the lack of chalk use in schools. Maybe you could get a petition signed to bring chalk back and not allow any school employees to sit. After that, the budget issues will be solved!!! Good thinking, I’m glad you posted your comment, now the county officials have a solution to their budget woes.

Based upon these comments, it’s truly amazing how uninformed people are.

Rather the complain about something you can only assume you know about, you ought to stop by and visit and see for yourself what is going on.

You wanna talk about saving. Try having the teachers use chalk, like they used to in the good ole days, instead of sitting on their behinds trying to cram a 1 hour lesson on one sheet of plastic paper, used on a projector. Electric bill will go down, teachers will get more exercise, and students will actually learn.

Obviously there are plenty of folks who want pick at the school empoloyees for “wasting money”. What about other county agencies? Look at Human Services. It has a Director (Lisa Peacock) and Executive Director (Chip Coleman) Why two heads of such a small agency? Both of them have cars to drive to and from work. Why? Their pay rivals the school adminsitraion and their agency is 1/5 the size of the schools. Why? They pay rent for high priced downtown office space. Why?  Be fair and look at the whole county government for waste. There’s plenty there if you look.

That whole building is not just the school board, it is also a middle school. I agree they waste alot of money. Why do they need an asst. superindent?  Culpeper is not that big, Cox could run it himself, and if i remember correctly he gets a vehicle and gas paid for, take that away from him.

What about the gigantic school board building? How much does it cost for utilities and Internet in that monster?
Why does the county need such an enormous chunk of real estate to run the system?
The oughta shut the heat/AC off in half of that building and save massive amounts of cash.
I was cruising through a small town in southern VA with a gigantic new county high school, but when I passed their “school board” building, it was no bigger than a 7-11 store.
Why do we need the spatial equivilant of the White House to run the schools?
