Good article, but ‘packing heat’ was not necessary

I wish to thank reporter Allison Brophy Champion for treating the subject of hunting varmints in a factual manner and not letting emotion (in either direction) color the article (“Varmint hunters: It’s on the shooter,” Tuesday).
However, she writes, “More than a dozen gun rights activists from a northern Virginia group showed up at the meeting, many packing heat.”
This engenders two questions:
1. What is the relevance of “packing heat?” In fact, the entire paragraph seems to be parenthetical, with no relevance to the rest of the article.
2. Why does she (and many other journalists) insist on dropping into B-movie dialogue when referring to an armed person?
Again, thank you for treating the issue factually.

cul_peper,
What business is it of yours why anyone else wants to pack heat?
Maybe the message is on his hip. Of course it could be a message like “I will defend myself to the best of my abilities and not hope a cop is handy if there is trouble.“
I thin Allison is going for “color” when she used the term and didn’t mean a whole lot by it. If she did mean it as a slur I suggest she get her butt out to a range and learn something about “packing heat”. There isn’t a lot of tolerance around here for people who demand all their rights be adhered to, except for the Second Amendment.

Why do you insist on packing heat?
Is your message delivered on your hip in a holster or through words designed to convey your message. Maybe your message is on your hip.
