Don’t let Obama weather this storm

In last Monday’s letter to the editor from Ms. Piatt (“McCain’s latest accusation seems a desperate one”), she would have us believe that the group called “The Weathermen” was just some benign protest group.
Far from it. They were one of the most radical homegrown terrorist groups we have ever had. They advocated the violent overthrow of our government, by words and deeds.
Ms. Piatt would have us believe that Sen. Obama knew nothing of Bill Ayers’ history, even though they are neighbors and worked on several projects together. Until Obama embarked on his run for the White House, he considered Ayers a friend.
I am glad Ms. Piatt has such trust in the media’s abilities to fact check, I for one trust myself to do my own fact-checking. I encourage everyone to the same.

Absolutely! As a recovering alcoholic/drug addict, I can tell you that Obama’s redistribution of wealth would have literally contributed greatly to my demise. The only reason I got clean and sober was that I had no choice - it was take responsibility for myself, or end up on the streets. It’s called tough love, and it works. Just check out an AA mtg. some time and you’ll find the truth. You’ll also find that no one there wants pity - it kills too many people.

How’s that, Buddy? Because I don’t agree with the new Messiah? Because I believe charity is not something that should be forced on people, but should be a choice made by individuals, and how they will be charitable should not be decided for them by arrogant politicians? Because I don’t believe we should EVER sanction partial-birth abortions, unless the mother’s life is in danger? Because I believe that hard work is a virtue, and sloth is a sin, and that under Obama we will certainly not encourage hard work in people who are looking for ways to avoid it? Because I believe that welfare helps to keep the junkies and crackheads using, and alcoholics drinking, and that givng them money for nothing is signing a death warrant for many?

If YOU are a Christian, I will be very sad. Christ’s teachings conflict with your thinking 100%.

And you cheapen Christianity by trying to use it to excuse Obama’s incredibly frightening choices for his associations - he got his “Christian” values from a man who yells, “GD America”. You actually tried to turn it into a virtue. That literally made me sick. That’s gross.

You’re gross. Not worthy any more conversation.

Gosh, choice (d) actually made me throw up a little in my mouth. Please. Oh ugh.
As for Ayers having no bearing on the election, I would have let it go long ago if it weren’t just one in a string of very nasty friends of Obama’s. Including his “Christian” America-hating pastor, and his “America is a downright mean country” wife, and Rezko, and ACORN, and on and on. Sorry - no can do. I want for him to explain why he seems to be so comfortable with people who hate this country.
And I guess now we have to change the definition of “maverick” to a Republican who endorses a Liberal candidate for President. I didn’t realize it could be so narrowly defined. Maybe you guys can write your own dictionary to use when we divide the country.

Or (d) Obama really is a Christian and therefore hates the sin, not the sinner. Regardless, since we can all agree that Obama doesn’t by default agree with Ayers’ actions, then their relationship should have no bearing. Colin Powell is a well respected man who seems to be the ultimate Republican maverick in this campaign.

To culpeper - I agree that you can’t pick your neighbors, but as someone with political aspirations, you should be careful about who you associate with. Obama’s association with Ayers is more than that of a neighbor. I don’t believe that Obama agrees with Ayers’ actions from over 30 years ago, but to have as close an association with him as they’ve had at least gives the impression that he (Obama) was either (a) ok with what Ayers stands for, or (b) showing incredibly poor judgement, or (c) actually impressed with his militant stance. Any of these are certainly worthy of more than a passing glance. And I know it’s been said, but would you guys want to let go of it if it had been McCain and an abortion clinic bomber who “wished he’d done more?“ I think the answer is pretty inarguably NO WAY!!
I also agree that “bashing each other for our opinions” does no good. It does seem to indicate the frustration level and incredible division present in the country today. I just don’t see how either candidate will be able to change that, either. We’re almost like two nations now - can’t agree on anything, including who the enemy is.

Ayers isn’t running for president. And I can attest to the fact that I have/have had some crazy neighbors. Just because we’re friendly, doesn’t mean we’re friends. You can’t pick your neighbors any more than you can pick your relatives and some of our presidents have had some winners as relatives. McCain’s brother called Arlington a communist country. Come on now. Us bashing each other for our opinions is far worse than the candidates schoolyard scrapping they keep doing on TV. I’ve actually heard the two of them defending each other as of late. People who live in glass houses…May the best man win.
