I read Robert Smith's recent letter to the editor about his belief that Councilman Chip Coleman should stand aside and not participate in the consolidation debate and decision because he already has an opinion ("Coleman should recuse himself on consolidation, Feb. 19").

As a member of council, I have opinions on issues, and my opinion shows when I vote either for or against an issue.

Does that mean I should recuse myself from every issue- I would hope not.

We, as elected officials, have and develop opinions on various issues we face. I think the voters want to know where we stand on important issues.

Mr. Coleman has an opinion about the cost of the consolidation question we face and its ultimate disposition by the voters.

Constituents call all members of council, asking questions and voicing their opinions. Based on those calls and other sources, we develop opinions and vote accordingly. That is how government works.

Mr. Coleman should be commended for saying what he thinks, based on the information he has, not chastised. You may not agree with his message, but you have to appreciate that he is not ashamed to say it.
