In the April 22 edition of the Star-Exponent, I noticed your artist drew his funny pictures of some candidates running for Town Council.
First of all, Cecil Schoniwitz might be a quiet man because he’s a thinker and problem solver, and the same goes for Jerry Beckett. Cracking your stupid jokes about these men is uncalled for. You give the public the wrong idea about these men. Mr. Schoniwitz is a retired Washington, D.C. detective who solved many cold cases in a crime-filled city that made a whole lot of people feel at peace.
Second, Jerry Beckett has fought in battles for his country that would make you cry like a baby. You should know their background before drawing pictures. Both men deserve respect, not ridicule. Both men would be good for this town.

Thank you Mr. Kelley for your feedback on the cartoon. I am glad you took the time to write in about your concerns, and I hope you will work hard to support your candidates in the election and beyond. I attended the Voter Forum at the depot, and the toon was done from photos and observations I made there.THE toon was part one of two intended for the paper, unfortunately the se did not print #2, so my intentions were not completed. In short, I could not fit all 10 candidates in one toon, so it appears I singled out these two which was not intended….lesson learned. wade

I looked back at the cartoon and did not see the “stupid jokes” you claim. The reporters and staff of this newspaper are supposed to strive to report facts on the news pages of this newspaper/website. I think they do. On the opinion page, the editors and cartoonist can inject their own “take” on the news, the newsmakers and issues. That’s what they did with this cartoon. These men and women have “put themselves out there” as candidates - they are under scutiny, they spoken about at the water coolers, the barber shops and anywhere Culpeper folks gather to discuss or debate. To be honest, the cartoon could have been more pointed. (But many readers would not have gotten the humor.)

Once again we hear from those who think military service excludes you from what others face when they step in the political arena. Give me a break. I served and don’t ask for special treatment and I know of no one I served with who asks for special treatment. If they cantake it like aman maybe you should stay out of it. BTW - I think Beckett deserves everyhting he gets.
