There have been many alleged abuses of power by the current administration. Until the elections of 2006, nothing was done by Congress to investigate the possible lawbreaking by the White House.
After the 2006 elections gave Democrats the majority, subpoenas were given to Harriet Miers and Josh Bolten to testify before Congress. They refused, under direction of their president.
To ignore a congressional subpoena and to not even appear before Congress is nearly unprecedented. Attorney General Michael Mukasey will not enforce a contempt of Congress citation, despite Congress's constitutional right to call such witnesses.
Teaching about the balance of power, and the system of checks and balances in our classrooms no longer is necessary.
