American pride is not based upon a political party

I watched carefully as our soldiers returned from the Gulf War and from Kuwait.

They were offered financial, physical and emotional aid (which they should get), but no one offered anything like that to my daughter-in-law as she and their young son awaited the return of her husband from two long tours in Vietnam where he served as a combat pilot on many dangerous missions.

Thankfully, he returned with many awards, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star and air medals for bravery.

In her Sept. 14 letter, Janet Wise says that whenever she sees someone in uniform, she thanks them for their service (“Many Americans were proud of Vietnam soldiers”).

But most veterans do not wear uniforms in their everyday life, so how can she know that my son is a hero?

Like Janet, I, too, am a proud American, and even though I do not get as misty-eyed as I once did when I see our flag flying in the breeze, because of George W. Bush and the Iraq War, how can she assume that I do not honor it?

I am a Democrat in a country that has honored the two-party system for as long as I can remember and where being a Democrat does not mean I am less of a patriot.

I shall continue to write my letters even though I know they are like a cry in the wilderness in this very Republican town, where perhaps some people should be reminded of what this country is all about and where perhaps some might vote for a very accomplished and competent black man.

Ronald Reagan was once a Democrat too, so there is still hope for you. On switching to the Republican Party, Reagan said that he did not leave his party (Democrat), his party left him. The Democrat Party of today would be unrecognizable to likes of President Kennedy or President Johnson. The Democrat Party has been taken over by the radical hard left. The Socialist and Marxist policies of today’s Democrats are in opposition to the founding fathers of our county, hence un-American.

As a former Marine,I am proud of “Pilot”
DeSerres too.I am proud of every member of our military. America is blessed with millions of heroes, and each and every one is special.

Even though you have an interesting take on facts,I hope you continue writing the editor forever.

You however, are mistaken about “some might vote for a very accomplished and competent black man.“ John McCain(Hero,Pilot,Accomplished,Competent and Distinguished Senator)isn’t black.

So let me ask you this Mrs. Deserres…will you be albe to sleep at night knowing that you voted for someone that is willing to help kill inocent babies? AND, if you are the proud AMERICAN that you claim to be, how could you vote for someone who won’t even be sworn in on the BIBLE?!

Accomplished and competent black men like Colin Powell or Michael Steele would indeed do very well in a Presidential race, but Barack Obama is not in their class. They have experience and knowledge and love this country, they don’t have racists or terrorists as friends, they aren’t offended to say the Pledge Of Alligience and they did not change their given name to a Muslim name. Both are respected and would make a good President. Remember, its the man running not his race that matters!
