HOW I SEE IT: Jenkins explains his gun ordinance vote

As a member of the Town Council, I did not support the recently proposed regulations on firing guns in town.

Law-abiding citizens no threat

If you look at the history of journalism, you will see reporters who have risked life and limb to chronicle wars.

Ban on handguns could also affect law enforcement

It really concerns me how many people are ready to make rules that affect everyone else without considering the full effect of their prohibitions.

Toting a gun at council meeting is not necessary

I am in complete agreement with Mr. Meriwether’s Sept. 18 column, although his attempt at humor may have offended some northern Virginians.

American pride is not based upon a political party

I watched carefully as our soldiers returned from the Gulf War and from Kuwait.

Meriwether not necessarily an expert on firearms

As for Mr. Meriwether’s suggestion to close West Street for Halloween (“Town Council trick or treat,” Sept. 18):  Why not close the whole town?

Town Council not intimidated

I read Gordon Meriwether’s column of Sept. 18. His next to last paragraph stated that the Town Council may be “intimidated.”

GOP refusing to take blame for the financial mess

The Republicans have controlled Congress (both houses) for eight of the past 10 years and the presidency for the past eight years.

Are any grocers out there listening?

I agree with recent letter writers concerning Culpeper’s desperate need for a full-service, quality grocery store.

U.S. thrives under Democrat presidents

America is fighting two wars. The U.S. financial system is in turmoil. Lies and name calling won’t help us choose the best candidate — we need facts.

LOC films are a special treat for the community

Sept. 19 at the Packard Campus of the Library of Congress at Mount Pony, 199 of the 205 seats were filled for a movie.

Kelsey Orndorff will live on in the lives she touched

Kelsey Orndorff was a dynamic young lady who taught all of us, regardless of our age, the true meaning of giving of yourself and helping others in need.

What a nice, refreshing story on the front page of Tuesday’s Star-Exponent.

Citizens at meeting were exercising right to carry guns

Mr. Meriwether wrote on Wednesday about a recent experience he had at the Culpeper Town Council meeting (“Town Council trick-or-treat”).

Food Closet needs help to provide meals for holidays

It’s that time of the year again when we take a look at where we are and where we are going at the Food Closet.

Thank you for rezoning 18 acres in Lignum area

As part owner of Culpeper Panhandle LLC, and being a resident of the Lignum area for 40 years, I would like to thank the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors for its 7-0 vote to rezone 18 acres in Lignum.

A response to Martha Williamson’s letter Sept. 7 (“Here’s what I don’t like about Palin”):

The 10 cities in the U.S. with the highest poverty rate are run by Dems (according to powerlineblog.com).

Wanted: One good store for Culpeper

I agree with George Willeman’s letter Saturday about Culpeper needing a good full-service grocery store.

Comparing our economic crisis with that of 1930

After 78 years, with visions of the Great Depression lingering in my mind, current events remind me of a time when the basic needs of many could be described in simplistic terms.

Janis concert provides 300 pairs of shoes

Once more the heart of Culpeper was evident as so many people gave new shoes at the recent “Shoes For Orphans” benefit.

McCain-Palin ticket not really about change

Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin (as far as we can tell since she can’t speak for herself yet) are in favor of following the policies the Bush administration has followed for the past eight years.

September 14, 2008

McCain too tied to Bush policies to bring real change

I laughed when I saw the front page of the papers with Sen. John McCain calling for “change.”

Many Americans were proud of Vietnam soldiers

I usually do not respond to letters to the editor, but feel I must respond to one Sept. 6 by Ellen DeSerres (“Lieberman is confused about his political party.”)

Actually, none of the new establishments warm the cockles of my consumer’s heart.

Sharman doesn’t understand real ‘American values’

As a faithful reader of Mr. Sharman’s Tuesday articles, I am increasingly confused at his claim of being an “independent” anything, as he seems to be a very consistent mouthpiece for President Bush’s policies.
