Sarah Wise / How I See It
Published: March 28, 2008
Just a few weeks ago Jeff Ferris was sentenced to jail for having sex with a minor and now Jason Compton is on the front page.
We see how the law works for certain people. As I see it, the white man just gets a slap on the hand and walks away and will not be called a sex offender, while the black man has this blot on his life.
This system is blind and somebody needs to wake up.
A few months ago a group of teenagers were charged as a mob and some got more time in jail than Mr. Compton did. To me this is discrimination, but call it what you want. This system we call justice is a big joke.
I like the way the Star-Exponent called it a rare charge of misdemeanor adultery ("Compton avoids trial in juvenile sex case," March 17). What's rare about it- Abuse is what it is.
It happens too often and people like Mr. Compton are not punished and it keeps on happening.
hen soemthing like this happens again, please let everyone be reminded that Compton walked away free and clear according to our laws and that a black man did the same thing and got sent to jail.
Both of these men have done something wrong. You cannot convince anyone who has a decent bone in their bodies otherwise. If you have any common sense you must know that this is wrong.
The story also stated that Compton and the young lady have a relationship now and the family gives them their blessings. All I have to say is this is a blessing I wish on no one.
Apparently, this family has a low moral standard as far as their child is concerned.
Just because the family has accepted this relationship, it still remains that a crime has been committed.
I don't care if you have the president's blessings, it doesn't make it right.
Our society has gone to the dogs, no respect, no morals, just live any way you can. I'm so glad God has the final say.
I don't know how Mr. Compton, the parents of this child or the lawyers who know he is guilty can sleep at night.
It's too bad Mr. Ferris' lawyer didn't find a loophole so he could go free.
Then he and Mr. Compton could sit back and pat each other on the back for their blessings.
God says "suffer the little children that come unto me," meaning no one should harm a child in any way.
The question is why does one person walk away and one have to go to jail-
But I'm sure we all know that answer, don't we-
Mr. Compton, your soul and your heart will never be free until you acknowledge the crime. You are guilty of stealing the innocence of a child.

First, “"I think it’s time that Culpeper as a community, go ahead and puts this to rest,“ said Sheriff Jim Branch. Thus the Sheriff suggests we just forget about a severe in balance in Culpeper’s legal process for the sake of Culpeper. What?
Next, “In Compton’s case, the alleged victim was entirely uncooperative and according to the special prosecutor, the two are still a couple.“ Let us examine this backwards logic. If Ferris was still having a relationship with said girl then he shoul not be in jail? Is that why Compton did not go to jail? But his crime was just as bad and the girl younger.
Lastly, “Apples and oranges “ the Shefiff belives. It is obvous that the deputy was a part of the good ole boy system and Jeff Ferris was an African American. That is your apples and oranges.
