Within 15 minutes and little or no discussion, the Culpeper County School Board passed four motions and postponed one item on its agenda during its regular meeting Monday evening.
The board unanimously approved increasing breakfast and lunch prices for the 2008-09 school year for both elementary and secondary students.
CCPS Food Service Director Greg Beamer addressed the board, pointing to rising food costs and additional labor expenses for opening two new schools — Eastern View High and Yowell Elementary schools — as the reason for the 25-cent increase.
Beamer said his food costs could rise as much as 10 to 15 percent this fall.
He said the 25-cent increase would provide about $135,000 in new revenue this fall.
However, the food service department is facing $240,000 in expenses.
“I’m still looking at $100,000 in negative impact,” he said.
In other action, the board unanimously approved its two-day summer retreat agenda at Graves Mountain in Syria on June 27 and 28.
Although, Rusty Jenkins voted in favor of the schedule, he still opposed the location.
He would rather hold the meeting much closer to home allowing the public to attend without driving out of the area.
The board voted to approve the changes for its code of conduct regulations regarding the cell phone and gang policies. Those adjustments can be found on the Culpeper County Public School Web site.
Board members also voted not to pursue the uniform policy at this time.
Member Leanne Jenkins applauded the students and staff for following the existing policies.
The board also decided to revisit awarding SHW Group a $126,500 master plan contract for Culpeper County High School during a special closed session meeting tonight at Central Office, 450 Radio Lane.
The architectural services contract would provide renovation plans for the 40-year-old school.

I do not have an issue with the increase in the cost of meals being increased. What I have an issue with is why does the school board need to take a two day retreat at Graves Mountain which is only going to cost money that we already don’t have. I realize that a lot of planning is done at this type of event but there is no reason that they event needs to be held out of the area and at a venue which will be costly. Why not hold the event in one of the many available county buildings including several schools.
