RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Gov. Tim Kaine has ordered the Virginia Department of Corrections to stop housing out-of-state inmates.
The directive comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by the Virginia Beach sheriff, who says it’s not right to lease prison space to other states while more than 1,800 Virginia inmates languish in local jails.
Virginia currently houses about 300 inmates from Wyoming, and the Department of Corrections had planned to bring in about 700 more inmates from other states. The revenue was intended to offset a $38 million budget shortfall over the next two fiscal years.
Department of Corrections director Gene Johnson told the House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday that prison officials now will have to find other ways to close the budget gap.

It’s a great start. Now - no reinstatement of Constitutional Rights until FELONS have FINISHED their parole. The political ploy to give convicted felons and illegal immigrants to the right to vote is no way to obtain the support of most who value our citizenship.
