Bizarre details have emerged in a car wreck that left an 8-year-old boy dead Friday night on Lakota Road in northern Culpeper County.

A felony warrant filed in General District Court by the Virginia State Police says driver Fielding Taylor Kines, 38, of Remington, “picked the 8-year-old off the ground and threw him in the trunk” after the crash.

The boy, Remington resident Orion Bickings, was the son of Kines’ girlfriend, who was not in the car. It is not clear if Bickings, who was ejected and died at the scene, initially survived. Police say he was not wearing a seat belt.

The warrant, written by Trooper J.K. Hathaway, also states that Kines drank vodka after the crash. In addition, Hathaway wrote, Kines admitted to consuming two mixed drinks before the accident but couldn’t remember what kind.

“When asked about taking the time to consume alcohol after the crash when he had a critically injured child, he said he was shaken up,” the trooper wrote, adding that none of the nearby residents — who were the first to call for help — observed Kines consuming alcohol.

“He had an extremely strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his person, glassy bloodshot eyes and was very unsteady on his feet,” Hathaway wrote.

According to the VSP, Kines was eastbound about a mile west of Clover Hill Road around 10:20 p.m. Friday when he apparently lost control of his 1999 Acura four-door. The car ran off the left side of the road, went over an embankment and rolled several times before striking a wooden fence and landing in a field.

The warrant states Kines may have tried to hide the severity of the accident and the boy’s injuries from police and witnesses.

Kines and Bickings’ 5-year-old sibling, who was in a car seat, were not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

Kines, who is being held in Culpeper County Jail, faces a felony charge of DUI third offense, felony manslaughter and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license. His court appearance Thursday was continued to June 12 at 1:30 p.m.

Only a neglegent mother would trust the care her three children to a known drunk with 3 DUI’s and a suspended drivers license.  I can’t print the words to describe Orion’s cold blooded killer.  Kim, how could you do this to poor little Orion.  You will have to live with this, the same as that dirtball boyfriend of yours.  But, you must know I will never forgive you for taking Orion away from me and my family.  May you rest in peace Orion and know we love you.  Great Aunt

I met Fielding Kines on many, many occasions and everytime he was drunk. His girlfriend knew he was a drunk. Why would a mother allow her children in a car with someone who is always drunk. I keep wondering if she isn’t also to blame.

To the family of little Orion My heart felt condolunces go out to you. I pray that the happy memories will ease the pain a little each day.          I hope the person that is responsible is held accountable for what he did!!!

I feel that the family’s of both the victim and the driver are suffering greatly from this tragedy.  It is so sad that the paper must keep writing about this. We should be showing compassion, not bringing up the gruesome details of this event and pray for the families.

Well maybe rjma they could have started by just saying 8 year old dies in accident.  That is enough to get my attention to read the story if only to see if it could have been someone I knew. It is not important that everyone in the Coumunity knows every little detail. It does not help the family to pick up the paper and have all this splashed on the front page. Just a little human kindness would be nice. People are still going to buy the paper and they are going to win awards but it should not be at the expense of innocent people. Guess I was raised in a different time!

Pat, I appreciate and share your concern about the trauma the family must be feeling but I doubt there was anything printed in this short story that they did not already know.  And surely they knew a lot more details than was reported here.  Reporters who cover stories like this are not thinking about how this will sell more papers.  They are thinking about doing their job of accurately but sensitively describing an event of great interest to the community.  Specifically, what parts would you leave out?

I believe this just goes to show how very important people feel newspapers are. AS long as we buy them they are going to get awards for doing great feature stories and I am sure they want to out sell the others papers around this area. When are we as humans going to get back to the caring about others? This story just needed to be written in a way to save the family from more pain and I do not believe it is important to know all the graphic details on the front page of the local paper. All The Press has way to much freedom and we as citizens care not control all that happens and our children do not need to read all this mean hateful printed matter. For once lets start to think about others instead of how much money we can make off of someone’s pain

To Orion,
Go peacefully, you are now looking down on us.

To Big Sis,
Yes your mother knew that Feilding was an alcoholic. Orion’s father would argue with Fielding and Kimberlain about the lack of use of a seatbelt. Your borther was killed instantly during the ejection and roll over of the vehicle. Yes parents need to ensure that childern where seatbelts, because guess what, they work !!!!!
This is one of those cases that every law enforcement officer hates to be involved in.
To Fielding,
You are a worthless excuse for a human being. May God have pity on you, because I sure as HELL don’t. Do the world a favor and stop breathing.

Drunk? Maybe he was, but a smart cop would check this one for Oxycontin.

My thoughts and prayers are with the this childs family. I do however find it disgusting people want to blame his mother. I have not read even one word that says she was drunk or had an accident or killed a child or tried to hide the childs body in the trunk of a car. I have a suggestion for some of you how about contacting MADD and ask them to help her through this tragedy.
Or mabye keep your head in the sand or up your ass, your preference.
