The Virginia Department of Transportation has opened nearly 55 extra parking spaces in two commuter lots near the town of Culpeper.
A new park and ride featuring 25 spaces is located on Rabbit Run near the intersection of Route 3 and U.S. 29. The lot is on the northwest corner of Rabbit Run.
The second lot — at the intersection of U.S. 29 and Route 663 in Brandy Station — is an expansion of an existing lot. The new lot, on the north side of Route 663 just west of the intersection, adds about 30 spaces to the existing 18.
VDOT officials say both lots have room for further expansion.
“With the price of gas, it’s another avenue for (commuters) to carpool and cut down on the costs of commuting, and it also cuts down on vehicles on the road,” said Donald Gore, residency administrator for VDOT’s Culpeper District.

There is a free iPhone app to help you coordinate carpools called Carticipate.
We gave a talk on carticipation at the Silicon Valley iPhone Developers’ Meetup in Palo Alto last week and posted the video here (select “high quality” mode):
