A pedestrian traverses the brick-styled crosswalk at the intersection of North Main and Cameron Street. South Main Street soon will be getting similar crosswalks installed between Davis and Mason streets.

South Main Street will get new brick crosswalks starting later this month or early next month.

Landsaver Environmental of Richmond will install nine new crosswalks from Davis to Mason streets, for $123,770.

The job should take about two weeks, said Bobby Thornhill, the town’s director of public works.

Landsaver installed the first nine bricked crosswalks in June on the north end and west sides of Main Street. That job took about 2 1/2 weeks and cost the town about $138,000.

Some 8,000 linear feet of synthetic stamped asphalt was installed earlier this summer.

The pending job will involve the installation of about 6,800 linear feet, Thornhill said. He said the crosswalks would last as long as newly paved Main Street would — up to 20 years.

In comparison, a standard thermoplastic crosswalk, though less expensive initially, would have to be reapplied every five years or so, Thornhill said.

Culpeper Town Council approved the switch to the brick crosswalks last summer as part of its adoption of the Culpeper Urban Design Plan.

Thornhill said the crosswalks are more visible and thus safer. In addition, the walkways meet all requirements of VDOT and the Americans With Disabilities Act, he said.

Town public works has also been working to install additional ramps along the curb at street corners enabling unfettered access by wheelchairs and baby strollers.

The Finance Committee recommended approval of the south side crosswalk expense at its meeting last week. The item goes before Town Council Tuesday for final approval.

Just another comment about these fancy crosswalks.  What if a water line breaks and they have to be dug back up?  Are we stuck having to redo the whole crosswalk at a huge expense?

We can’t properly fund our schools and we’re paying this kind of money for fancy cross walks?  I agree with a previous poster, why not just us Street Print instead!  Smoother and it has to be a lot cheaper!  Where are our priorities in this town?

A total of $262,000.00 for Cross Walks (cigarette butt catchers)??? what are these people thinking???  The town and county are having MAJOR financial problems, yet we can spend over 260,000.00 on this.

Why not use Street Print instead?  You won’t even need to mill up the new asphalt that you’ve already paid for.  The new bricks already laid are VERY rough, as if they weren’t installed correctly and were just jammed in to make them fit.  Go over them in a car with a firm suspension and it feels like you’ll hit the roof, even at slow speeds (I’ve tried going over creeping, yep, still awful).  And why was a cross walk installed in front of the State Theater, yet there is a parking spot on the southbound side directly in front of it that blocks the view of pedestrians from those in cars.
