The Culpeper County School Board is in search of its next superintendent.

At its regular meeting tonight,  the board will consider appointing a superintendent search committee to help find the best candidate.

“It makes sense for a committee to do the legwork, but the decision will be left up to the board,” said Vice Chairman Bob Beard.

The meeting is open to the public and starts at 7 inside the County Administration building.

In June, the board voted 5-2 in favor of mutually parting ways with former Superintendent David Cox after seven years of service.

Cox, 47, will provide “consulting and transition services” to the board during his one-year paid sabbatical, which ends June 30, 2009.

The board appointed Acting Superintendent Larry Carter to take over those duties effective July 1. Carter’s one-year contract ends June 2009.

Carter, 61, has served as the school division’s executive director of administrative services since the fall of 2004.

His duties included assisting with policy development, maintaining compliance with federal and state policies, providing discipline oversight, assisting with school safety and crisis planning and oversight of the technology, maintenance and transportation departments as well as the oversight of the budget areas of health, administration and attendance.

As chief administrative officer, Carter provides leadership and directs the management of the school division in accordance with School Board policies.

The board will also consider the parameters for hiring a temporary, part-time School Board vision facilitator.

The School Board’s existing vision is “to become the highest-performing school division in the Virginia School Board Association’s Central Region,” according to the CCPS Web site.
