An off-duty Town Police officer on his way to work stopped a suspected drunk driver Tuesday, according to police reports.
Police charged Kendrick H. Burner, 35, of the 1000 block of Longview Lane, with felony driving under the influence and driving on a restricted license.
While in uniform on his way to work, Officer William Barnes saw a blue 2007 Jeep Liberty cross the double yellow lines on Blue Ridge Avenue near Yowell Meadow Park, then fail to stop at a stop sign. Barnes requested an on-duty unit before following the vehicle into Southgate Shopping Center.
According to the report, Burner nearly hit several cars in the parking lot before stopping in front of the ABC store. Burner handed Barnes his keys before failing several sobriety tests. An on-duty officer arrived to transport Burner to police headquarters.
Burner is being held in jail without bond. He will appear in General District Court Jan. 8 at 8:30 a.m. for arraignment.
