Martha Wright, 84, rose to the top of her class at Culpeper’s first black school on Main Street before graduating as valedictorian from the Culpeper Training School on Old Rixeyville Road in 1941. Wright earned degrees from Norfolk State and Cortez Peters Business School in Washington, D.C. Following college, she worked in a school cafeteria and then in an insurance office before her retirement in 1986.
Today, you can find her volunteering at Antioch Baptist Church and a local medical facility. In 1979, the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows honored Wright with its highest degree. She also served as a district supervisor for 12 years and was president of the NAACP from 1999 until 2001.
