Spitfire gets off to a solid start

The Fauquier Spitfire 18U girl’s fastpitch softball team kicked off its showcase season with a third-place finish in the SoftballNation Valley Blaze Tournament held June 28 and 29.
The tournament, in Harrisonburg, played host to 12 teams and featured many of the top teams from the Shenandoah Valley.
The Spitfire, with outstanding pitching, timely hitting, and an aggressive gritty style of play, held its own against the strong competition.
By only allowing eight runs in three games, Fauquier finished second in its bracket on Saturday.
In Sunday’s Championship round Fauquier defeated the Virginia Legends Gold then the Spitfire advanced to the semi-finals and lost in nine innings to the Smashing Apples.
The team has remaining showcase tournaments in Richmond, Virginia Beach, and Harrisonburg.
The current Spitfire team has representatives from several local high schools and colleges, including Liberty High School, Culpeper County High School, CD Hylton, Colonial Forge, North Stafford, Spotsylvania, Virginia Tech and Shenandoah University.
