State library directors recognize county's work
Fauquier County Public Library recently received word that it had won the 2007 award for outstanding library facility from the Virginia Public Library Directors Association (VPLDA) for renovations done to the John Barton Payne community hall, 2 Courthouse Square, in Old Town Warrenton. The building, which was home to the Warrenton Library from 1924 through 1982, is now used for library programs and as a community meeting room.

Renovations to the hall were completed earlier this year and included refurbishing the interior, installing a rear stairway and a lift and modifying the building to comply with American Disability Act (ADA) standards. The new stairway provides a second means of egress, which increased the building's occupancy load from 50 to 100 people.

In the late 1990s the library stopped using the building for library programs because it was not handicapped accessible, and in 2005, Gum Drop Square, a Christmas shop for children sponsored by the nonprofit Partnership for Warrenton, was moved for the facility because children in wheelchairs could not visit with Santa. The lack of handicapped accessibility spurred the Board of Supervisors to approve funding to make the building complaint with American Disability Standards (ADA).
