It started back in February when the Culpeper Lady Bulls basketball team began practicing to participate in the Charlottesville Women’s Recreation League, which consisted mostly of teams from Charlottesville.

The Charlottesville squads had dominated the league for some years, with most of the players boasting experience on high school and some college teams.

The Lady Bulls were made up of Culpeper County High School graduates who had not played organized basketball since graduating and one current CCHS student. The Culpeper team got off to slow start in the beginning, not knowing each other well.

But the Bulls began to gel as a unit just as crunch time came. After three months of practicing and playing together they became a tight-knit group and experienced success at the end of the year.

With everything on the line at tournament time, The Lady Bulls showed what they were capable of. Playing against the league’s second placed team in the first round, Culpeper’s defense and determination put them over the top and the Lady Bulls moved to the finals with a 37-28 victory.

The championship was played at the Herman Recreation Center on June 8. With outstanding defense and and offense that was nearly unstoppable, Culpeper played its way to the league title. The Lady Bulls easily beat the Heavenly Hands 37-14 and brought the winners’ trophy back home to Culpeper.
